Has Mica been unfairly discredited?

By Maleen L.

💡 Did you know that mica is a natural product and has a protective and pore-refining effect?

Mica is a general term for a group of shiny natural minerals. Because they protect against environmental influences, they are also used as insulation for electrical devices. In cosmetics, however, mica not only provides a pore-refining shimmer effect but also protects the skin from UV radiation (Spanish study by Rincón-Fontán et al. 2018).

Our new Décolleté Glow Serum contains edelweiss stem cells and mica. Product Details

😮 But have you ever heard that mica is linked to child labor and is said to be harmful to your skin ? Today, we'll explain why the mica in our products is completely safe and can even have positive effects on your skin .

Why can mica be problematic?

The "Mica Belt" in India is particularly known for child labor:

☠️ Many mica mines there are operated illegally and pose high safety risks . Workers breathe in particulate matter every day, which can cause various diseases , such as pneumoconiosis (study by Zinman et al. 2002). Furthermore, illegal mica mining leads to significant environmental pollution (Ghosh et al. 2023).

According to a study by the children’s rights organization Terre des Hommes , around 22,000 children were employed in the Mica Belt in 2015 (Schipper & Cowan, SOMO, 2018).

Is there also sustainable mica?

Yes! The Responsible Mica Initiative was founded in 2017. It aims to improve working conditions in the mines, provide educational opportunities for workers and their families, and improve the legal situation .

🌱 Our supplier is even a founding member of the initiative: Our mica raw material is mined in Georgia, USA under fair conditions and is therefore sustainable and harmless .

🥰 Mica is also completely harmless to the skin : Only the fine dust should not be inhaled, but this is not a problem with liquid products containing mica.

The particles do not penetrate the skin and remain only on the surface. There, they not only give the skin a healthy glow, but also refine the complexion and regulate sebum production. They also protect the skin from environmental influences , such as UV radiation.
